THERE’S  A  BEAM  IN  MY  EYE!

Matthew 7:1-5

By Rev. Dean Beaty 11/20/08

I must have E.S.P.  About this I would not lie.

I see the faults in others though a beam* sticks in my eye.

My normal sight has narrowed and some say, so have I.

But a gift I have been given, though a beam is in my eye.

Specks as small as motes,* they’re there you can’t deny.

I see them clear as day though a beam sticks in my eye.

I’d help to pull it out but I just can’t take the time.

But I’ll tell your friends and neighbors. Not to help would be a crime.

I’ve gotten so accustom to this beam stuck in my eye

It isn’t hard to see at all where all your problems lie.

Such a talent must be polished just like a bright topaz.

To spot those tiny hidden faults that everybody has.

Sometimes I think my beam even helps to magnify.

Though I cannot wear my glasses with this beam stuck in my eye.

Some look in awed amazement.  Others I mystify;

How I could see so clearly with this beam stuck in my eye.

I know I have my faults.  I’m not perfect, though I try.

I do the best I can with this beam stuck in my eye.

I feel so very useful when a problem I imply.

It’s a cross I gladly bear; this beam stuck in my eye.

*beam = a large piece of wood such as a rafter.

*mote = a dust like particle.
