The area around Antietam Creek had been home to Native Americans for centuries prior to settlement by white men in the mid-18th Century. Scotsman John Wallace built a cabin and laid claim to the area. His sons, George and John, expanded the fledgling community, erecting a church and school. The town of Waynesburg was plotted in 1797 by John Wallace, Jr. Its name was changed to Waynesboro in 1831 when the state decreed that towns had to have distinct names, and there were other places named Waynesburg. It is one of several dozen towns, cities, and counties named after General Anthony Wayne.

During the American Civil War, Waynesboro, a strongly pro-Union town, played a part in the Gettysburg Campaign in June and July 1863. In the week before the Battle of Gettysburg, Confederate Major General Jubal Early's division of Lieutenant General Richard S. Ewell's corps of the Army of Northern Virginia passed through the community on its way northward. After the battle, General Robert E. Lee rode through the border community with his retreating forces. In 1963, a book, Thirteen Days under the Confederate Flag, told of the occupation.

Waynesboro was chiefly an industrial town in the early years of the 20th Century. It was known for the manufacture of engines, boilers, grinders, threshers, boring machines, bolt cutters, wood and iron workers' vises, nut facers, etc. There were also foundries and machine shops, and manufactories of lumber products. Some local manufacturing companies included the Frick Company, the Geiser Company, and the Landis Tool Company. In 1900, 5,396 people lived in the town; in 1910, 7,199 people; and in 1940 10,231.

Waynesboro is home to the renfrew Museum and Park, an historical museum depicting 18th century farm life, named after two young sisters who died there in 1764 in an Indian attack.

Waynesboro is also the home of the first school in Franklin County, Burns Cabin, which is located on Burn's Hill.            The community, with a current population of 9,614 (2000) had its beginnings about 1749, when John Wallace, a Scotsman, settled by a spring located a few hundred yards west of the Antietam Creek (East Branch).

Wallace held title to 633 acres,119 perches almost a square mile. He called his land holdings Mt. Vernon. Upon his death, the land was conveyed to a son Robert, who later conveyed it to his brother George. George owned it a short time when he conveyed it to brother John, who had recently returned from fighting the war. The Wallace's lands were often referred to as Wallace's Town or Wallacetown, as they were the largest land holdings in the area.

In 1797, John decided to lay out a town and placed 90 lots on the market. He named the town Waynesburg, after General Anthony Wayne, his commanding officer in the war. There were several other communities in the state with similar names and in 1831, when the Federal Government ruled that the names of post offices in any one state could not be duplicated, our town was rechartered and took for its corporate title the name of Waynesboro.

Waynesboro, because of its location on the frontier at the time of the French & Indian War (1755-1764) was in a particularly vulnerable position and was the scene of some of the Indians' most barbarous raids. Two victims of such were the Renfrew sisters, who lived just east of Waynesboro along the Antietam Creek. Today, there is a museum and park, named for the girls, at the site of their massacre. The museum, an outstanding exhibit of decorative fine arts, dates to 1812.

When the Civil War came along, Waynesboro was again cast in the role of a "Frontier town", this time because of its close proximity to the Mason-Dixon Line. Historians tell us that residents of the area spent half their time burying and digging up their possessions and fleeing north toward Harrisburg. Among those fleeing when the confederates entered Waynesboro was John Phillips, cashier of the local bank. Mr. Phillips made it to safety with the banks cash and valuables, his wife and son, all loaded into one carriage. Most residents stayed on, watching apprehensively, as 75,000 Confederate Soldiers headed north to Gettysburg. Waynesboro was under Confederate  rule for 15 days.

The Foundation for Waynesboro's Industrial activity was laid by George Frick, who operated at a number of locations in the Waynesboro area. His invention of a steam engine, small enough for farm use, replaced cumbersome horse-powers. He founded the Frick Company in 1873. The firm switched to making refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and is now part of York International. They are still one of the leading employers in the Waynesboro area.

Shortly after Mr. Frick established the Frick Company, two brothers, Abraham and Franklin Landis, came to the area from Lancaster County. With their inventive minds they manufactured the first cylindrical grinding machine in 1883. They formed a partnership in 1889 to manufacture and market the grinder, and six machines were sold in the first year of operation. A patent was granted to Abraham B. Landis in 1890, based on the 1883 design. The partnership was succeeded by the Landis Tool Company in 1897 and is now a division of Litton Industries.

    A. B. Landis then turned his attention to the problems of threading bolts, and his solution to the problem was a new and unique screw cutting die head for a turning machine, with one being built in 1887. A patent was granted in 1889, but the product was not marketed until 1903 when the Landis Machine Company was organized. This company now is known as Teledyne Landis Machine.

Education and religion have played a vital part in the cultural activity of the community. The first church and school, built somewhere between 1770 and 1780, still stands on Bourns Hill overlooking a school complex of 3 modern buildings. The log structure, often referred to as Bourns Cabin was used as a school on weekdays and as a church on Sundays. Early records of one schoolmaster indicated he had 17 pupils who were charged about $5.00 each for a 6 month session. Today, the Waynesboro School District consists of 4 elementary school buildings, 1 middle school building and 1 senior high building, all with a total enrollment of about 4,300. May i introduce to you a simple lady our friend Myrna Ferguson. WE LOVE YOU MYRNA!                                                      Thank you Thomas for this fabulous opportunity of being featured in the Sunday Showcase

My bio has really changed since this summer, like my life has changed dramatically since this summer.
OMG!  I wonder why you have to get so old before you get so smart. Putting your sorrows behind you is a really wonderful thing.  First, you have to forgive whoever wronged you. This takes work and  I can say that I have finally done that. Think good thoughts.  If,  you are constantly keep those thoughts alive you can never get over the problem. So put the past into the past where the past belongs.  Then you can really find the true meaning of love, because you love yourself first. Like the automobile accident I was in, it has now turned out to be a blessing, it opened me to find real love.  Everything happens for a reason

One person here at AdLandPro is Jill Bachman, she has been my rock, she doesn't know how much I think of her.  I thank her for the Journey on the Mountain of Love, and for Attitude of Gratitude. She  has been a wonderful inspiration to me for  learning, and how to love more. Thank you my friend, "Jill".

I recently meet someone on the internet, I wasn't really looking, but isn't that when things happen, when you are not expecting them.  In the short time I have know him, he has changed my life, because he makes me feel like I am wanted and loved.  Thanks Ron.  If, it gets much better then this folks, I am going to be flying.

Love is the Answer

Hi Peter,

Thank you for coming to the Sunday Showcase.  Thomas sure has done a wonderful job on my town of Waynesboro.  The only thing wrong is the second picture, that is not my town.
But the history is some of it that I didn't know, so I am still learning.  lol  I hope I keep on learning.
