THE PERFECT CHURCH
By Rev. Dean Beaty 10/20/08
I moved to a new city and began to settle down.
There were many churches all around the town.
But finding the right church isn’t easy I declare.
The things that I discovered would fill you with despair.
One had an early service, it was like a jamboree.
The later was for seniors, now where’s the unity?
Some churches were so large you couldn’t get a chair.
Since there were so many, they really didn’t care.
Most would use a hymnbook though not singing out at all.
One church took the words and flashed them on the wall.
Some had different versions of God’s Holy Word.
Some used two or three, whichever you preferred.
Then there was the preaching to please the current crowd.
Some you couldn’t hear, while others were too loud.
Some wore suits and ties, some “come as you are.”
Some choirs needed practice, they were better from afar.
One preacher got excited and jumped up on a chair.
One even taught the Bible, now that was really rare.
Some churches stopped their singing to run around the hall.
While other ones ignored you and didn’t speak at all.
One preacher spoke ten minutes but most went really late.
One thing they had in common, each one passed the plate.
One spoke about salvation, it was good as I recall,
But when it was all over; no invitation call.
One preached fire and brimstone from out the fiery deep.
Another was so humble he put the crowd to sleep.
One taught Greek and Hebrew, it was over most folks head.
It was so intellectual that it was mostly dead.
When I find the right one, from it I will not roam.
Till then I’ll keep on looking until God calls me home.
I’ll find the perfect church, for with patience I’ll endure.
But I will not join it, for I’d spoil it that’s for sure.
