SUNDAY SHOWCASE_Featuring DENNIS TURNER 09/21/08
9/20/2008 7:11:08 PM
Greetings Members, hope your enjoying your weekend! Todays feature is a man of great patience! I say that cuz i too am the oldest in my family. A family man and a business man in travel. He was born in Vermilion, Alberta, Canada. :)

Vermilion is a town in Vermilion River County, central Alberta, Canada. It is located along Highway 41 (Buffalo Trail) and Highway 16 (Yellowhead Highway).

The economy is largely service industry to agriculture.

Vermilion is located 192 kilometres (119 mi) east of Edmonton, 38 kilometres (24 mi) south of Clandonald, and 60 kilometres (37 mi) west of Lloydminster.

It was not until 1902 that a significant number of settlers arrived in this area of Alberta. Mostly of British ethnic background coming from the east. Just west of Vermilion is the line between British and those of Ukrainian ethnic background having travelled mostly from west.

In 1904, a post office was established at Breage approximately three miles east of the present townsite.

In 1905, the railway arrived and a station was built. The post office was relocated from Breage. Throughout the days of steam, the railway was important to Vermilion. Vermilion was used as a divisional point. It had a water tower to resupply engines, a large roundhouse, an extensive yard, a Y, a turntable, and a bunkhouse for engine crews. With the decline of steam power in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the railway became less important.

In early 1906, Vermilion was incorporated as a village and reincorporated as a town later in the same year. The name Vermilion comes from the red clay found in the river valley. In fact, one of the first businesses in Vermilion was the brick factory which operated from 1906 until 1914. Some Vermilion buildings built from brick from this factory are still standing.

The first newspaper to publish in the Vermilion area was The Signal. In 1909, S.R.P. Cooper established the Vermilion Standard which continues to publish to this day.

In 1911, the provincial government established three demonstration farms near Olds, Fairview, and near the Vermilion townsite. The Vermilion farm later became the Vermilion School of Agriculture, then Vermilion Agricultural and Vocational College and today is Lakeland College.

Like other towns built on the prairies in the early years of this century, Vermilion had an extensive fire on April 10, 1918 which destroyed 28 stores and businesses.

In the 1970s, an instructor at the college designed a grain dryer. He established a company, Vertec, to manufacture and market this dryer and eventually a large grain dryer factory was built in Vermilion. For a brief time, Vermilion billed itself as "The Grain Dryer Capital of Canada". However, Vertec did not enjoy lasting success and went bankrupt. Today the large former factory is a storage facility for agricultural products.

For a small town, Vermilion is the hometown of several prominent Canadians, including cross-country skier Beckie Scott, hockey players Jeff Woywitka and Grant McNeill, cookbook author Jean Paré.

The town had a population of 4,435 in 2001, and the average age of the residents of the town was 66.2.

In 2006, Vermilion had a population of 4,036 living in 1,766 dwellings, a 2.2% increase from 2001. The town has a land area of 13.69  (5.3 sq mi) and a population density of 294.7/km² (763.3/sq mi)        Burning at sunset by JoLoLog

The town has two public schools: Vermilion Elementary (K-6) and J.R. Robson Secondary (7-12), and one Catholic school, St. Jerome's Separate School (K-12). The town also attracts students to Lakeland College (offering two year diploma programs) and training in emergency response.

The Community Complex includes a hockey rink, a dance hall and a curling rink. The Fort Vermilion Heritage Centre manages 25 sites (listed as both provincial and national historic sites), including the old log houses, the Dominion Experimental Farm, first nations and natural history exhibits.

St. Theresa's hospital is a facility built in 1983, offering 36 acute care beds and 10 long term care beds. It employs approximately 76 health workers, and is administered by the Northern Lights Health Region. The Provincial Court of Alberta maintains a circuit court in Fort Vermilion, with the base point located in High Level. The court is hosted in the old hospital building.

The Fantasy North Golf & Country Club is a 9 hole golf course with a 150 years history. Additional facilities include a mini golf park, driving range and clubhouse.

The hamlet also has by a public library and three churches. The St. Lukes Anglican Church Cemetery dates back to 1877. Located east of the settlement is Fort Vermilion Airport (TC LID: CEZ4), administered by the Municipal District of Mackenzie. It is and airstrip that serves Fort Vermilion as well as other settlements in the surrounding area.

The Rodeo Grounds are located 5 kilometers (3 mi) south-west of the community, and host a rodeo every year in July. The event features cattle roping and bucking broncos along with other competition. Other events and festivals held in Fort Vermilion include Canada Day celebrations, Town and Country Fair, River Daze and Arts and Crafts Show.   May i present to you Dennis Turner. WE LOVE YOU DENNIS

Dear Thomas,

Thank you for this opportunity! Here is a short bio:

I was born in Vermilion, a small town in Northeast Alberta, Canada and was raised on a farm near there. As the oldest of a family of seven, I learned responsibility at an early age. Having five brothers and only one sister, not only did I do outdoor work, but helped my mother with many domestic tasks as well. While I was growing up, there was not indoor plumbing. Doing laundry, washing dishes and cleaning house were significant tasks in a large family, as you can imagine!

Outside the house, there was plenty to do as well, so boredom was non-existent. I learned to milk cows, feed pigs and chickens, clean barns, and do general repair work. Other skills included welding, electrical wiring, carpentry, mechanical work and machinery repair. Over the years, all this has served me well around the home as an adult, doing maintenance and renovations.

I did well in school, but the process seemed to be taking too long. So, at age 15 I left school (at the end of grade eleven) and finished high school by correspondence in much less time than by attending school. In 1966, I began an apprenticeship program and became a journeyman Communications Electrician and have worked in the Telecommunications field since them.

I have a number of on-line business ventures that serve me well. My real passion is the Health and Wellness industry where I am able to help others in so many ways. As a TriVita Business Affiliate since 2003, I have had the opportunity to make a major difference in the quality of life for my customers as well as Business Affiliates. This is a real customer-focused business. My ratio of customers to Business Affiliates is approximately 150 to 1. That is a very satisfying and rewarding structure. My customer base now extends throughout each of the US states and Canadian provinces.

Thank you Thomas for featuring Dennis.

Congratulations Dennis, you come from a beautiful
area and I hope someday to be able to visit your
country.

I too was the oldest of seven and endured
much of the same things you did growing up but
we were happy and I treasure those memories
as I'm sure you do.

Enjoy your time in the spotlight and have a blessed
weekend.

Achi Thomas,

Nice Sunday Showcase and thanks for featuring Dennis.

Hi Dennis, Congratulations on being featured in this weeks Sunday Showcase. Enjoy your week in the spotlight.

BTW, if you think being the eldest of 7 has responsibilities try being the "one and only" with a widowed mother. Much harder I think. :)

Shalom,

Peter
