Hi Pauline & Friends,

Interesting topic and one that deserves open discussion.

All forum owners have the option to delete spam and block or ban habitual spammers. From what I read it doesn't seem that the judge that wrote the comment had that in mind.

Community related is the point in my opinion. When a forum is moderated it gives the forum owner the option to not approve a post that doesn't jibe with the forum owners opinion and that is censorship and has nothing to do with community related forums and discussions.

As Pauline and others mentioned all forums have rules and if you don't abide by them the "offender" can be warned the post deleted; blocked and banned if they are repeat offenders.

Take this thread as an example. No spam here it seems and if there was Pauline can delete the spam. It seems that spamming is an excuse for control, censorship and keeping things clean and tidy to the forum owners delight. Doesn't allow for an open discussion though with opinions that don't jibe with those of the forum owner.

I personally post in very few moderated forums for the above reasons. I dislike censorship in any form and always abide by the rules of all the forums I participate in. In those that I do it is for the sake of the person being honored or featured and not for the forum owner. If it is someone I don't know I don't bother posting.

So to sum up we all have the control to delete spammers whether it is a moderated forum or not (that is much less time consuming then moderating all the posts). The moderation is an excuse for censorship and that is not community related in any way manner or form.

I agree with the judges comment. Thanks for opening this discussion.

Shalom,

Peter

Hi again JoAnne,

Good to see you back, this is turning out to be a great discussion, and Im glad we all can come here and speak our minds freely and respectfully, no need for moderation here LOL [at least I hope so !!!]

I would say in all my time here, I have not had  much problems with my forums or having to moderate them, spammers will be spammers, through ignorance or willfullness ! I do have to go do a lot of 'house cleaning ' at my forums !!!! :-) But I would be an advocate to freedom of views and expressing ones thoughts on a decent level with all due respect to the forum owner and its members. As is the fine example of whats being done here.

Thanks again my friend, always great to see you !

hugz= showing u care;-)

Hi Pauline and Friends,

AdLandPro has been quite eventful since being away for a couple of months. There are great responses and postings in regards to the judge’s comments.

Touché to JoAnne Green’s comments, for they all make sense and agree to all of them.

On the other hand, all the quotes have their strengths. Here is just to name a few who stood out from one’s point of view. John Allen 111, most definitely Georgios Paraskevopoulos, Ana Maria Padurean et al. Quite impossible to list all. Brilliant yet judiciously stated comments!

Your friend,

Babette :)

Cool Sunset Greetings from California, Pauline!

Thank you for your acknowledgment of my points of view.

I always appreciate your hard work to present the BFA Forum, particularly the spreadsheets of the judges' scores of each nominated forum.

Personally, I would prefer to see the BFA be a people's choice award, selected by the votes of the members of the community just like the POTW Award, rather than by an invisible panel of judges.

On another matter, I strongly believe that there are other pertinent reasons that a forum owner may choose to monitor a forum beside weeding out spammers, and those reasons don't necessarily have anything to do with censorship of ideas or opinions. Among the other legitimate reasons may be to keep the forum free of profanity, vulgarity, racial slurs, abusive language, religious bigotry, gratuitous
nudity, advocating illicit drug use, violation of intellectual property rights, and illegal activities.

These are things that I will not tolerate on any of my forums, regardless of whether I choose to moderate the forum before or after the posts appear on my forums. If I do decide to create a forum that is pre-monitored, it will NOT be for the purpose of stifling discussion or expunging any ideas that differ from my own. And if someone did wish to do that, he or she could do it just as well with either type of forum.

One other thought: I do not think that all forums necessarily have to be about debating ideas. Such forums are good, but there are other valid objectives for a forum, and if, for example, someone wants to be a cheerleader for something, I see nothing wrong in that. If someone wanted to do a forum about the joys of gardening, I can understand that he or she would not necessarily want it dominated by posts from people who hate gardening.

Of course, everyone is free to participate or not participate in any forum for any reason, and anyone who is not happy with the existing forums is free to start a new forum that suits his or her own taste.

Again, thank you for allowing me to express my opinion on this topic. This will be my absolutely very last post on this subject . . . . . unless, of course, the spirit moves me. SMILES, LOL, and All That.

How about another drink of Strawberry-Mango-Rita. (Would you like an Excedrin with that?) Here's to you, Pauline!

God Bless You!
