Probably the most significant thing about me is the fact that I’m a North American working as a teacher in a university in a country in the Middle East. I’m a human export taking pressure off the job market back home and sending money back to my country’s economy.

I’m also in a part of the world many people in North America consider to be dangerous and unsafe. Well, I can’t say much for the many bullying drivers who ride your bumper, flash their lights, and honk their horns just because you are not going further over the speed limit than you are already, but I can say that the United Arab Emirates has been a safe place to live and work.  I can think of many other places that are much worse.

I hate the heat during the summer, the lack of rain, and the high amount of desert dust in the air, but I like the fact that my wife can walk alone at night on the city streets, that any muggers are so few that they make headlines and are usually deported after their jail terms.
