I got a rash of these over the summer, always from someone I didn't know. I did what I always do and deleted them.
I use the Snopes site whenever I get strange sounding mail in my inboxes - it's a very handy tool, and from what I understand it's quite reliable.
In general, don't let your common sense go on vacation when you're online - it's public, it's not as secure as you may think, and there are always 'entrepreneurs' trying to figure out the 'perfect' scam or another way to throw a wrench in the works somehow.
