Re: Islam vs. Christianity (11/11/2007

Hi J.V.,

I asked the Pastor of our church why he believed the temple will be rebuild and here is his answer:

There's a lot of scripture concerning the end times and it takea a while to cover it. The common belief among many Christians is that the temple will be rebuilt in Jerusalem and the daily animal sacrifices will be offered once again in this temple. The Jews will do this, not Christians. They are still worshipping God under the old covenant. Sometime after this temple is built, the great tribulation will begin.

In the middle of the seven year tribulation period, the antichrist will sit in this temple and cause the sacrifice and offering to cease. This is what Jesus was referring to in Matthew 24:15,16 when He said, When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
16. Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: (KJV) Read Daniel 9:25-27

The Apostle Paul wrote to the Thessalonians and expounded a little more on this in II Thessalonians 2:1-4,
Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. (KJV)

This temple must be built before Christ returns at the end of the tribulation in order to fulfil this prophecy.   When the tribulation period is over, Christ will come back and set up His kingdom for the 1000 year reign on earth. Revelation 20:4

I hope this clears things up a little as to what I was referring to.

God Bless,
Pastor Dunn

Marrion, thank you for taking the time to talk to your pastor about this.  Did you, by chance, show him why I feel that a temple in Jerusalem is not necessary?

I am somewhat familiar with the line of reasoning that Christians with his point of view have.

Just because we do not hold to the same point of view in this regard doesn't mean that either of us are non-Christians.  We just have a different understanding on something that doesn't pertain to salvation.

He believes what he has been taught and may not have researched to find out why he was taught that or where that teaching came from.

There was a man by the name of Charles Darby who lived in the 1800's who helped to make the pre-tribulation doctrine popular although I don't think it originated with him.  That is the doctrine that your pastor apparently believes.  As far as Christianity is concerned the 1800's, when Mr. Darby lived, is relatively new.  So that concept has not always been popular among Christians.

The prophecy that Jesus gave in Matt. 24, according to my understanding, has already been fulfilled.  Jesus said it would be a time such as had never been before and would never be again after that.  There are historical records of a great tribulation that took place among the Jewish people when the New Testament church was just beginning.  The first Christians gave or risked their lives when they converted from either Judahism or paganism to Christianity.

Think about Saul whose name was later changed to Paul, how he delivered a lot of Christians up to be tortured and killed.

Jesus even mentioned in His prayer recorded in John 17 that his disciples would be hated of all nations because they were not of this world even as He wasn't.

As far as the Jews needing to build a temple in Jerusalem, we must remember that salvation is offered to all nations, tongues, and people through Jesus Christ so that would include the Jews!  It would also include the Muslims if they would only come to an understanding faith in Jesus Christ.

God promised Abraham that in his Seed [meaning Jesus Christ as Paul explained in Galatians] all nations of the earth would be blessed.

Paul also explained in Galatians that it is only by faith in Jesus that we are Abraham's children and heirs according to the promise.

If anyone is interested in doing more research on the pre-trib rapture theory, I recommend that you go to http://www.wcg.org and click on the "Search Our Site" bar then type in "pre-tribulation" or "post-tribulation" or "1000 year reign" or "thousand year reign" or "rapture" or "left behind" or any other key words you might think of along those lines.  Be sure to click on the radio button to search google within the WCG website. I know there has been much research done on the subject fairly recently.

Also you can read articles that have been archived on the http://www.ptm.org website as well as "Ask Gregg" where you can either submit your own questions or read answers others have asked or both.

May God bless us all to know what He would want us to understand correctly.

Love and blessings,

J.V.

Corrections:  Sorry Marion, I mis-spelled your name!  But that's not all, the man's name that I mentioned is John Nelson Darby, not Charles Darby and another word which is probably the best of all to google on the WCG website, and it just wouldn't come to mind, is dispensationalist.

It has been made very popular among many Christians of today and has even been made more popular by the "Left Behind Series" but I feel that we would all do well to investigate who, when, and how that belief came into existence and whether or not we should support it.

Hank Hanegraaff has written a book that challenges Tim LaHae (sp?) that I would recommend anyone to read.  I can't think of the name of the book right now but Hank's website is http://www.equip.org maybe you can find the book I have in mind there.  As far as I know, it's his latest book.

Love and blessings to you all,

J.V.
