The wonderful portrait of the great Spanish poet Luis de Gongora y Argote below these lines was painted by Velazquez at least two years before he produced those of Felipe IV and his brother, the Infante Carlos (seen in the next post).

Back to Felipe IV and the Infante Carlos, Velazquez painted two very similar portraits of them in both attire and stance but alas!, pretty dissimilar in their faces. They were completed circa 1624 and 1626-1627 respectively.

This other magnificent portrait of Felipe IV was probably completed in 1628. It is considered a fragment of a larger work painted in two stages, reforming the dress and adding the red band in the second.

And here is Velazquez's well-known self-portrait painted circa 1640. Just wonderful.

Around the time he painted his famous self-portrait, Velázquez also painted several almost identical versions of this mysterious lady. A romance perhaps?
