Roger, on all of these self portraits, they all have no smiles, so serious, is this always the case?
Would like your take on it.

Myrna,

Interesting question.

This is the most likely reason for these self portraits not showing smiling people.

How do most artists manage to paint a Self Portrait

a) Before the birth of photography a mirror was the only way to see your own image. The concentration required to copy the image and put it onto canvas makes a VERY LONG smile require.

b) After photography there is a chance to copy a photograph making it easier to produce a smile, however, many portraits are painted to show the person in a particular situation (maybe a business image) and the tendency to be serious seems to have continued.

Hope this helps Myrna

This is specially for MIGUEL,

One of Miguel's favourite artists.

This is lifted from his excellent art forum.

This artist appeared in many of his own paintings
