Destructive flash floods hit parts of Greece

Posted by on

Destructive flash floods hit parts of Greece on June 26, 2018, causing serious structural damage. Numerous rivers burst their banks across the mainland, sending high-speed flood waters through populated regions.

One of the worst-hit areas is the town of Mandra, the seat of Mandra-Eidyllia municipality, where 24 people died after similar flash flooding in November 2017. There are no reports of injuries, but structural damage is very high.

Around 30 homes were flooded and local roads submerged in the area of Kanalia after streams broke their banks, eKathimerini reports. Some 40 firefighters were on duty in the broader area and responded to scores of calls to pump out flooded basements or rescue stranded motorists, with the assistance of 17 fire engines.

Widespread flooding was also reported in Larissa.

Nearly 3,000 firefighters deployed as wildfire rages in Northern California

| Jun 27, 2018, 6:41 AM ET

WATCHWestern wildfire threatens hundreds of homes

A raging wildfire in Northern California has grown by about 3,000 acres on as firefighters fought to contain the blaze, which has already destroyed at least 22 homes and buildings, authorities said.

The Pawnee fire has burned at least 13,000 acres in Lake County, California, north of San Francisco, as high temperatures and windy conditions fanned the flames, fire officials said.

About 2,700 fire fighters have been deployed to the area, but the brutal weather conditions have made the fight difficult. The blaze was about 17 percent contained as of late Tuesday.

Fire crews battle the Pawnee Fire on Cache Creek Road on Monday in Spring Valley, California.

"The fire burned very actively throughout the day in the Spring Valley area, northeast of Clearlake Oaks in Lake County. The fire is being driven by low relative humidity, erratic winds, and above normal temperatures," the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said in a statement late Tuesday. "Expanded evacuation orders are in effect for the entire Spring Valley area and residents are reminded to heed all evacuation orders."

The inferno has destroyed 22 structures and damaged at least four others since it started Saturday evening. Officials say at least 600 homes, businesses and other buildings are at risk as the fire moves northeast.

More than 1,000 residents have been evacuated because of the fire.

"The firefighters – oh, my God -- the minute you think you're in danger, they are there," resident MaryAnne Silva told ABC News. "So thankful for them putting their lives on the line to keep us safe."

Vehicles and homes on Wolf Creek Road were destroyed in the Pawnee Fire in Lake County as residents were forced to evacuate and the fire continued to burn out of control on Monday.

California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in the area Monday in an effort to help county officials recoup some of the costs of battling the fire.

The blaze had already caused power outages and road closures and could damage “critical infrastructure,” Brown said.

FEMA said it recently approved fire management grants to help with the cost of fighting the Pawnee Fire and the Creek Fire in Shasta County, California.

New eruption of Mount Agung disrupts air travel, Bali, Indonesia

Posted by on

Several eruptions were registered at Indonesia's Mount Agung volcano in Bali on June 27 and 28, 2018. The eruptions produced a dense ash plume that rose up to 5 km above sea level and forced AirAsia to cancel numerous flights on June 28. Officials in Ngurah Rai International Airport are still assessing whether to halt operations again.

Agung erupted on Thursday, June 28, 2018, producing a dense white and black volcanic ash plume that rose up to 1.5 to 2 km (5 000 - 6 500 feet) above crater summit. This is up to 5 km (16 404 feet) above sea level.

Ashfall was reported in nearby communities.

At least 27 AirAsia flights scheduled to arrive to and to depart from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (NGRI), Denpasar have been canceled or postponed and the company urged all guests to update their contact details at airasia.com to ensure that they are notified of any updates to their flights.

Ngurah Rai officials are assessing whether to temporarily halt operations following Mount Agung’s latest eruption, their spokesperson said.

While flights on other airlines are currently all on schedule, anyone flying to our out of Bali is urged to contact their airline.

The Alert Level remains at 3 (on a scale of 1 - 4) and the 4-km-radius (2.5 miles) exclusion zone remains in effect.

Authorities are urging residents living close to the volcano as well as tourists to respect the exclusion zone.

Update

Bali closed its international airport early Friday, June 29 (local time) after a pilot detected ash as high as 7 km (23 000 feet).

"Based on the meteorology agency prediction, the volcanic ash will reach the airport on Friday morning," airport spokesman Yanus Suprayogi said in a statement.

The airport is expected to be closed at least until 19:00 local time, June 29 or longer.

June 29, 10:25 UTC

Based on the evaluation meeting on the impact of volcanic ash due to the eruption of Mount Agung, it was decided that IGNR airport reopens for operation at 14:30 WITA, June 29.

Severe drought affecting 40% of Inner Mongolia, China

Posted by on

A persistent drought is affecting as much as 40% of China's remote northwestern region of Inner Mongolia, causing over US$91 million in direct economic losses.

The regional weather bureau said Inner Mongolia has seen 25% less rainfall since mid-June and is around 1 °C (1.8 °F) higher in temperature than during the same period in previous years.

By June 27, 2018, nearly 37 million hectares (91 million acres) of grassland and over 35 million livestock had been affected, according to data provided by the regional department of agriculture and animal husbandry.

The conditions caused rat plague which is threatening more than 4 million ha (10 million acres) of grassland throughout the region.

Officials said Inner Mongolia's northeastern and eastern areas suffered their worst drought on record in 2017.

By late May 2017, 120 000 people and half a million livestock were grappling with a shortage of drinking water, according to China's Minister of Water Resources Chen Lei.

At least 23 killed, 11 missing after heavy rain floods northern Vietnam

Posted by on

At least 23 people have been killed and 11 are still missing after severe storms hit Vietnam's northern mountainous provinces. The worst affected are Hà Giang, Lai Châu, Lào Cai and Điện Biên. Authorities said that water level in upper reaches of rivers had reached record levels during the past 20 years.

Heavy rain started falling throughout the region on Saturday, June 23, killing 5 people and leaving 12 missing in the province of Lai Châu. Floods and landslides swept away or damaged hundreds of homes, the country's Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention said, adding that some sections of national and provincial roads were damaged, causing serious traffic jams.

According to the latest report of the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, flash floods across the affected provinces have killed 23 people and left 11 missing.

Torrential rains and floods have also swept away 161 houses, damaged 958 and submerged thousands of hectares of crops. More than 195 cattle and 5 900 poultry were killed while nearly 1 500 homes are still submerged under water.

All of Hòa Bình, Sơn La, Lai Châu and Hội Quảng-Bản Chát hydroelectric plants are operating stably, safely and are ready for the flood season this year, experts said, as reported by Vietnam News.

The statement was made at a conference of the science and technology consultancy committee about hydroelectricity safety held on Tuesday, June 26 in Hà Nội.

Minister Anh confirmed that although the water level in upper reaches of rivers had reached record levels during the past 20 years, the hydroelectric plants worked safely.

Natural disasters during the first 5 months of this year killed 13 people and injured 21 across the country. Nearly 11 000 homes were destroyed or damaged as well as 6 100 ha (15 073 acres) of rice and other crops, leaving property losses of nearly 24 million US dollars. In addition, 8 200 cattle and 3 500 poultry were killed, according to Vietnam's General Statistics Office.
