1,000 in Romanian gay pride march amid moves to limit rights

Some 1,000 people joined a gay pride march in the Romanian capital of Bucharest Saturday, demanding greater rights amid government moves they say will curtail their rights.

Some 30 ambassadors expressed support for the march and for protecting the rights of the LGBT community, and U.S. Ambassador Hans G. Klemm was among those taking part, despite the pouring rain.

The gay pride march, now in its 13th year in Romania, comes after lawmakers approved an initiative that could amend Romania’s constitution to explicitly state that marriage is a union between a man and woman. The wording now is a union between “spouses.”

In a carnival atmosphere, participants carried rainbow flags and umbrellas and brought dogs and children as they walked down a tree-lined avenue.

Participants held a minute of silence as they passed the Russian Embassy in solidarity with gays in Chechnya, where dozens have been detained and tortured.

Earlier in the day, a few dozen anti-gay protesters staged a counter-march, saying they were opposed to adoptions by same-sex couples.

Patrick Braila, a movie director and gay rights’ activist, called for marchers to remember gays in Chechnya, and Romanians who had moved abroad due to discrimination. Romania decriminalized homosexuality in 2001.

Vlad Viski, chairman of the gay rights’ group MosaiQ, said Romania must legalize civil partnerships in Romania “because gay couples are a reality.”

“They must be respected by the state, as they pay their taxes and therefore they must be treated as equal citizens,” he said.

Singer Florin Chechisan, 29, said attitudes had changed in Romania in recent years, “but too little.” He said he counted himself lucky because “my friends and family accept me.”

North Korea fires second ballistic missile in a week

North Korea fires another ballistic missile 01:21

(CNN) North Korea conducted its second missile test within a week, sending a medium-range ballistic missile into the waters off its east coast Sunday, according to statements from North Korea and other governments.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised the test fire of the ground-to-ground strategic ballistic missile Pukguksong-2, state news agency KCNA reported. The report was issued Monday local time and does not state when the missile test took place.
"The Supreme Leader issued an order to launch the missile at the observation post," KCNA reports. "Together with officials, he analyzed the results of the test launch and expressed his great satisfaction over them, saying it is perfect."
Kim said the test showed the missile is ready for deployment and mass production, according to KCNA.
A North Korean Pukguksong-2 missile lifts off from a mobile launcher on Sunday, May 21.
South Korea, which on Sunday had called the launch "reckless and irresponsible," said Monday the launched showed progress in the North's missile program.
"South Korean and U.S. intelligence authorities assess that North Korea, through its missile launch yesterday, has secured meaningful data for improving the credibility of its missile technology," said Roh Jae-cheon, spokesman for South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The Pukguksong-2 is a land-based version of North Korea's main submarine-launched missile. First tested in February, it uses solid rocket fuel.
Solid fuel is like an explosive jelly, and less corrosive than liquid fuel, meaning it can be easily stored in the rocket's fuel tank, unlike the liquid alternative, which requires specially lined tanks.
Solid fuel-powered missiles need much less infrastructure, making them difficult for those monitoring North Korea's military movements to spot, as there are fewer indicators, such as movement of trucks, for South Korean or US satellites and other surveillance to pick up on.

A missile believed to be the Pukguksong-2, a land-based variant of the Pukguksong-1.

South Korea said the missile flew about 500 kilometers (300 miles) from an area near Pukchang, in western North Korea.
Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada said the missile hit the water about 350 kilometers (217 miles) from the east coast of North Korea. She said the missile did not go higher than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles), according to preliminary data.
Altitude was key to the test a week earlier, which analysts called North Korea's most successful ever in its quest to develop ballistic missiles that can carry nuclear warheads.
The May 14 test reached an altitude of more than 2,100 kilometers (1,300 miles), according to North Korea. Analysts said that test showed gave North Korea critical information on developing a re-entry vehicle for nuclear warheads and showed Pyongyang had a missile capable of striking the US territory of Guam.

Behind the Headlines: Leaky Swamp Plagues Trump: The Saga of Nutjob Comey and Israeli ISIS - Plus Seth Rich

    © Reuters
After the lull in anti-Trump hysteria courtesy of his mega Tomahawks, the never-Trumpers are back in action. Trump met with Lavrov in the Oval Office. Ergo, the Kremlin is now in full control of the White House. Or so the hysteroidal media no-brainers would have us believe. The sight of a Russian - nay, more than one Russian! - in the White House was enough to provoke ecstatic heights of gleeful agitation among those who seem to derive some perverted sense of satisfaction that their deepest nightmares are true. This form of pathological masochism would be hilarious if it weren't for the fact that it is tearing the United States apart.

First, some anonymous somebody criminally leaked details of an Israeli intelligence operation involving ISIS to the Washington Post, but mendaciously blamed Trump for doing just that. Only Trump didn't, and the Russians have the transcripts to prove it. But the Americans don't want those transcripts. They derive too much pleasure from seeing their fearful fantasies come true, thus justifying even more leaks that don't bear any resemblance to reality. Thus, second, some anonymous somebody leaked that Trump called Comey a nutjob to Lavrov, hinting that Trump had political motivations for firing him. This on the heels of the alleged Comey memo suggesting Trump tried to get Comey to back down on his investigation of Flynn - despite the fact that Comey already testified under oath that no such thing happened. Oh, and the Russians apparently bragged that they had total control of Flynn's mind using Soviet-era ESP technology, or something like that.

But it's not all bad news. The unsolved murder of DNC staffer is back in the news, with several individuals claiming they know that he was the leaker of the DNC emails. If true, that would reflect somewhat poorly on Mrs. Clinton and her team of ne'er-do-wells. After all, one of the Podesta emails has him writing "I'm definitely for making an example of a suspected leaker whether or not we have any real basis for it." And if there was a basis for it? What then, Mr. Podesta?
