Backlinks are permanent trails of conversations from one URL to another. Search Engines like GoogleBot (the robot Google uses to scan, spider and index web pages) are beginning to page rank these link exchanges. Bing has announced they will index Facebook links. This is why some people go overboard and "friend" total strangers. It does you no good if you do not talk on a regular basis.
