RE: Great announcement for Native Americans

Hi Pat,
I know I had Amazing Grace on here before but this version is so much better. Thank you so much Pat, I was really in tears before it was over. It is just so beautiful.
I just found this article:

A succession of blizzards have ravaged several tribal communities across Indian Country and they are in great need of donated goods (e.g., non-perishable food, water, shovels) and financial assistance in order to purchase medical supplies, propane for heating homes, and gasoline for emergency vehicles.

The National Congress of American Indians is asking that you contact tribal personnel directly to find out specific needs and share your resources with them. Please be aware that there may be other tribes in need and if you have additional information, please contact NCAI and we will send out an update.

If you have any questions, please contact Ahniwake Rose at NCAI, 202.466.7767 or arose@ncai.org.

**Contributions to a federally recognized tribal government are treated the same as a contribution to a state government under 7871 for purposes of charitable contributions deductibility; as, the contribution will be used exclusively for "public purposes" which in this instance is disaster relief for the ice storm of January 2010.

Why can't the government send them some help, they give help elsewhere.

I hope this helps them some.

Pat I think you will enjoy this. I know I did.

Myrna, you always have some fantastic information, stories, songs and videos in this forum. It is good to come over and read some of them. My actual experiences with Native Americans has been brief. I dated a really handsome one when I was young. I used to get to go to Cherokee, NC in the summertime and just wonder where all those little trails led to. I have always been in awe and wonderment of those people who lived in this land before the other 'natives' moved in. I believe if we listen to the grasses and wildflowers, touch the soil and whisper to the wind, we will feel the presence of the spirit that lived before. I used to do that when I moved to Kansas. I never had any 'experiences' but I surely learned a lot of the plants and animals here.

I have not seen any mention of books (probably in there somewhere!) about novels relating to current tales of Native Americans. One of my favorite authors on the subject is Tony Hillerman, because I am a devoted fan of mysteries. I have read most of his tales of Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn. I have always wanted to visit the Four Corners after reading his books. Here is one of the first I read:

There was also a movie on this one.

I pray that this copies to here ok.

It is very special.

You would need to join to see the picture in the link, A great writers network

My friend Fabian G. Franklin at

http://coldcoffee.ning.com/group/thepoetsparlor/forum/topics/cherokee-ghosts

She sent me this wonderful poem that she wrote. She explained to me:

Most people don't know that Cherokee were entertained in the court of King George. This portrait of Stalking Turkey was one of the resulting paintings.Note the British jacket and medals.

SORRY, COULDN'T BRING WONDERFUL PICTURE (Roger)

Cherokee Ghosts; forgotten dead
Crying smoke through mournful hills
Bits of pottery and arrowheads
Scattered like their memory still

Voices of vanished thousands of years
Echo beyond graves from long ago
Before the infamous trail of tears
Through wood of deer and buffalo

Thatched roof houses; sweat lodges; gone
Jasper jewelry; silver and bone
Blow guns with their hunting darts
From milkweed thistle; an ancient art

Legends declare their native birth
They spread across Appalachian land
The oldest mountains of the earth
Mother to the Cherokee band

Long before Europeans came
Before white men brought horse and plow
Ani-Yun'wiya carved their name
History that is mystery now
