Getting rust off old can openers
2/14/2008 9:15:10 AM

OK, here's another puzzle.  I bought a box of old tools and stuff and, in it, were some old can openers.  I think they are from the 50's judging from dates on some of the other stuff in the box, and they have beer advertisements on them.  I am sure they are collectibles but the problem is that they have rusted from sitting in the box in a garage somewhere for decades.

Does anyone know how to get rust off old metal objects?

I've tried a couple of rust removers but they haven't worked.

OK, after reviewing just about a gazillion websites, I think I've tried just about everything to get rust off these old can openers and have come to the conclusion that they just have too much rust.

Some of the ideas I found, in case anyone else needs to remove rust:

soak in coke then scrub with aluminum foil

soak in salt and lemon juice then scrub with aluminum foil

wd-40  then...aluminum foil or steel wool

also saw sites that recommended barkeeper's friend and naval jelly.
