In recent years the state of mental health especialy after 9/11 has increased in an
alarming number of people. The problems (and some non-specific to 9/11) are Post Traumatic Stress Disorder,
Panic Attacks, Obsessive Complusive disorders (actions & thoughts), and anxiety
disorders (including attacks).
This installment will be in regards to anxiety. Of course some of the above can be
and sometimes are related in some way. Example: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
(PTSD) has many many elements involved in that disorder (see DSMIV).
There are medications out there for these disorders. I will mention some.
However, I am not here to diagnose or treat, but to offer assistance. But, by all
means don't listen to people who claim they can heal you of anxiety and panic,
ptsd etc., with tapes, hypnosis, and other stuff. It's not that simple a matter.
Also there are some e-books claiming they have the answer. When all is said and
done they list medications and resources for "help". Can some things help? Yes!
Do they totally eliminate the symptoms, NO! I call these particular disorders (since
I suffer from many of them) "vexations of the spirit". That can rake havoc on your
body and relationships. Most, not all, Vietnam (war) veterans have been married 3
- 4 times and have strained relationships with their children! (The Veterans
Administration 2008)
So here are two descriptions of anxiety. I will let this post hang out there until next
Sunday February 17th. Give people time to take this in - get time to read it, and
perhaps have something to ask or say. I really desire to help more than anything
else because I have spent 37 years in these disorders and they are and can be
"hell" to live with. Many drug users and alcohol abusers can be traced to an anxiety
disorder.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder: The person is constantly tired, apprehensive, worried
or has morbid thoughts or fear of attack, accompanied by physical distress,
shortness of breath and muscle spasms. This condition usually expresses itself as
the person moves through normal daily routines in a state of tension and can
continue for 6 months or longer. Going into "remission" and re-appearing without
warning (this is why I say hypnosis does not work and is dangerous for this
disorder). GAD must be treated by a qualified physician.
Anxiety Attack: Unlike Generalized Anxiety Disorder, an anxiety attack is where
the feeling of absolute terror strikes suddenly and lasts from a few minutes to
several hours. This condition creates havoc in the person's life and can result in a
reclusive lifestyle because anxiety attacks can occur at anytime and anyplace.
Physical symptoms include mental confusion, nausea and muscle trembling. This
can bring on a feeling of "their coming to take me away".
Myth: Anxiety attacks do not bother you at all, will go away and will not harm you. My Answer: WRONG! As you age there are many severe risk factors.
