Dear Marilyn,

Kenny, who ran away from an abusive father, found himself homeless, alone, confused and unsure of what to do next. But going back to his father wasn't an option.

Unfortunately, there are approximately 750,000 to 2 million young adults in the U.S. who experience homelessness each year -- much like Kenny.

Kenny discovered the full scope of his father's abuse when he found his real mother and learned that when she was seventeen, his father had raped her. He had hoped to live with her and go to school, but it didn't work out that way when overcrowding and the stress of trying to form a relationship with his mother became overwhelming.

Many youth who do not have safe shelter have "aged out" of foster care, been released from detention facilities or are runaways from abusive homes. But the Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing Act (HEARTH) would put greater decision making power at the local level, expand resources for emergency shelter and support services, improve homeless prevention activities and give our communities flexibly to create a range of housing solutions.

It is an outrage that youth go homeless in the United States.
