And we have more reasons to celebrate…

ChildrenUNICEF reported that for the first time since record keeping began in 1960, the number of deaths of children under age 5 around the world has fallen below 10 million this year, reflecting progress in areas such as malaria prevention, childhood immunizations and breastfeeding rates. Thank you Care2 members for supporting UNICEF and taking action to save children's lives.

Last week, a federal judge in Vermont ruled against the U.S. automakers and upheld a state law that regulates greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles. The regulations — adopted by California and 14 other states— would require a 30 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from cars and trucks by 2016. The ruling in Vermont adds enormous momentum to our efforts to reduce America's global warming pollution from automobiles, and to the hard work of our partner non profits such as Environmental Defense, the Natural Resources Defense Council and Sierra Club.

Thanks to the millions of Care2 members who have signed petitions in the past to help curb greenhouse emissions. As you can see, your support is already making a difference.

ManateesFlorida's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has postponed a decision on a controversial proposal that would have downlisted manatees from "endangered" to "threatened" on the state's imperiled species list -- a proposal that could seriously undermine protections for manatees. Florida is home to the largest concentration of endangered manatees in the U.S. with an estimated population of more than 3,000. Congratulations to all of the supporters at Care2 and our partner Defenders of Wildlife who took action to protect Florida's manatees.

Have a great TODAY!
Beth

I heard on the radio... that if you are dependent on Medicare or Medicaid... I'm not sure it applies to both.... andthat is your only way of paying for medical  and you are diagnosed with cancer at a facility that is not on a specific list... of hospitals or providers... that Medicare or Medicaid won't cover the medical care you need to survive cancer!....

Has anyone else heard about this?

the below action alert is about Medicare and the elderly and doesn't specifically address the cancer coverage I mentioned above...

Care2 Action Alert
Hi Beth,

Let’s face it, we are all getting older. And we’re not alone – by 2030, 20 percent of the American population will be 65 or older. We need to fix Medicare now!

Too many men and women who have worked hard all of their lives find themselves struggling to keep up with medical bills as they get older.

They haven’t done anything wrong. The current health care system just isn’t equipped to offer the care aging people need at a price they can afford.

Urge Congress to improve Medicare and stop leaving senior citizens behind >>

Congress is expected to vote any time on a health care package for senior citizens and children - and we need to make sure this legislation addresses critical Medicare issues, particularly when it comes to lower-income senior citizens.

If and when you start needing extra care, wouldn’t you want access to health care you could afford?

Older Americans deserve better treatment. Tell your senators and representatives to make senior citizens a priority and improve health care for us all >>

Thanks for standing up for the senior citizens of today, and of future generations.

From Care2 Sincerely,
Breeana L.
Care2 Campaign Team

P.S. A National Health Interview Survey found 50 percent of women and 40 percent of men over 65 suffered from arthritis and/or hypertension. Ailments like these often require expensive prescriptions or costly doctor visits - costs many cannot afford in our current system. Please sign today >>

Hi Beth,  I always enjoy your forum posts, todays with the manatees especially.  And living here where they are visible often (water is usually very clear) is a treat. Until you've bumped into one, you can't imagine how peaceful these creatures are.  Also the sea turtles who come ashore to lay their eggs.  Both species are in trouble because of man and what a shame.  And all it takes is for boaters to obey the no-wake zones and leave the turtle eggs alone! Keep up the good work, Beth, you friend - Chuck
