It is beyond a doubt that Mattel’s recall of millions of toys because of safety reasons is an excellent decision. No ethical business individual or company (large or small) should give-in to the “temptation” of placing money/profit above the safety and welfare of clients/customers.
We also know the IT Computer Industry and Motor Vehicle Industry are also and occasionally involved in some sort of product recall because of defects in their commodities. But sometimes this is not done until consumers are injured or even killed. And that is not acceptable.
Mattel (according to the safety experts and media investigators) has a good record of product safety for consumers. But the volume of recall in this current and on-going case with China made products in so huge that it alarms many worldwide.
To blame China without reservation is not good. The US has Laws in place to check and monitor toys (and other imported products) for acceptable safety standards, while China (as we heard via World News Media) does not. So America should be extra careful. And this does not take away any blame from China…they certainly need to do much better in this regard without worrying about export profits or favorable terms of trade with the US.
Let us hope that Business Ethics will continue to receive the high regard it deserves.
