NEW YORK (AP) — Actress Sherri Shepherd will be introduced next week as a new cast member on "The View," giving the daytime chat show its first full cast since before Rosie O'Donnell came and went.

Shepherd is no stranger to "The View." She was a guest host more than a dozen times, many of them this summer as she tried out for a cast slot left empty since Star Jones Reynolds left last summer.

She appears in the upcoming film "Who's Your Caddy." Her lengthy resume includes roles on "Pauly Shore Is Dead" and "The Jamie Foxx Show." She even played God once on the CBS show "Joan of Arcadia," although it's doubtful her new colleagues will give her the same voice of authority.

Published reports had Walters set to appoint Shepherd in late July, around the time Whoopi Goldberg was selected as the show's new moderator. But the announcement was delayed, perhaps a sign that hardball negotiations were taking place.

Meanwhile, preliminary Nielsen Media Research ratings found that 3.4 million people watched Goldberg's debut on Tuesday. That's one million shy of O'Donnell's audience for her first show last September. O'Donnell's stormy tenure on "The View" lasted less than a year.

Goldberg created headlines of her own her first day by defending NFL star Michael Vick in his dogfighting case. Goldberg said that where Vick came from in the South, dogfighting isn't unusual.

On her "Wake Up With Whoopi" radio show heard on New York's WKTU-FM on Wednesday, Goldberg said she wanted to make clear she didn't condone Vick's actions. The Atlanta Falcons quarterback admitted he provided money for a dogfighting ring that operated on his property and helped kill six to eight pit bulls.

"I do not think what Michael Vick was smart," she said. "I am thrilled that the cops took care of it.'

Hi Marilyn,

Having grown up in the South, I have to step in and say that from my experience, dog-fighting is not any kind of "Tradition" in the South.  Now Cock-Fighting, on the other hand, did have it's time in the sun down in my neck of the woods, as they say.  Matter of fact, my next-door neighbor, back during my youth, raised Gamecocks and did quite well with the endeavor.  I can still remember my Dad having to have our Bulldog put down, after the poor dog tried to chase a couple of the Fighting Roosters off of our lot.

The sad part of this whole situation, other than the obvious disgust that any "Civilized" human being would actually enjoy watching two animals kill one another, and call it Sport, is that one of the greatest Scrambling Quarterbacks to have ever played in the NFL, has ruined his life and career, because he forgot to engage his Brain before he took action.  Gets you in trouble every time.

Finally, the truly amazing fact that I got from this is that

It absolutely astonishes me that there are actually 3.4 Million people who actually waste an hour of their lives watching The View.  Once again, just my Opinion.

Hello Marilyn,

I have been so busy this week I did not get to watch The View. It is one of the only talk shows I watch in the morning. I must say I had not watched much before or after Rosie O'Donnell was on. I loved that Rosie acctually took a stand for what she beleived in!

I do like Sherri & Whoopi so I will try to get back on track & turn them on.
