Hello Rick!
It's not so much about the programs. Most programs do have a "money making" opportunity to them.
It is in the marketing of those opportunities that makes ALL the difference.
What happens here all too often is someone will send a message to "look at my offer" ...and the reply comes back... "Thanks... but look at MY offer!"
Now most of all these "offers" have a "affiliate" url which is a block long or "tinyurl" (which might as well be: imhidingmyrurl.com)
I would absolutely defy ANYONE to "prove" that they are making significant money by using an "affiliate link." No one has proven it to me yet.
My favorite ads are the ones that say: "EVERYTHING IS FREE!" Everyone can sign up for free and never pay anything and you can become rich!!
In order for someone to make a dollar, someone has to spend a dollar! With the totally free programs you would be hard pressed to find anyone who has made enough money for a nice dinner.
The programs that require your commitment of $10 or $20 a month, have a lot more potential for profitability.
It does not make sense to look for a good paying opportunity where no one spends any money.
I am not saying that affiliate marketing is bad. It is a great thing for people who do not have their own products or services.
You will find that the successful affiliate marketers have their own domain name, their own web hosting and they offer free information in order to entice the visitor to view their offer. They also build a list of email addresses for future contact.
I have written a book on how to effectively promote any business or affiliate program on Craigslist by placing free classified ads. Craigslist Secrets I have one or two affiliate links in the book but you don't see an "affiliate" link anywhere. There is some Google ads, a Clickbank publication and one or two others.
I offer the book for free... and it does have some excellent information. Then at the end of the book I offer a list of my resources for $7.00. Anyone can do the same thing.
I am in the business of helping people do exactly the same things..
One method of promoting affiliate links is with a graphic ad. Here is an example of an ad I just completed for a client. In the ad, you don't see any affiliate link but when you click on it, it goes to her affiliate site. (I'm not recommending this program, just showing you the ad and helping promote my client a bit. You be the judge.)
Remember... It's all in the marketing! Get creative!

If I can help let me know.
Regards,
Bill Long
