Hi Craig.  I have a few domain names but I'm not sure if I have the other items you mentioned.  I'm still learning.

Hi Susan,

Thank you for your question!

As you probably know, acquiring a domain name is one of the first steps en route to building a web presence. Although, there are many more hurdles along the way.

After you've secured your domain name(s), it becomes necessary to partner with a hosting service provider to make your domain accessible to the internet community. Like most other things in this world, not all hosting companies provide the same service level. For our purposes, I focus on reliability and speed. It's tough enough to drive traffic to your site and when the visitor arrives, you better provide the best possible "user experience" otherwise all your effort to this point may be wasted. Users or more importanly potential customers expect your web page to load (as opposed to the dreaded 404, web page not found error) and load quickly! The lesson here is that you get what you pay for - beware of hosting prices that are too low or to good to be true! Initally, most providers appear fairly equal but trust me, they aren't.

Acquiring a Static IP address becomes important as you strive to achieve and climb Google or any other search engine rankings. In an attempt to avoid a technical description (that may fall on deaf ears), a good analogy may be the difference between a high profile business address (101 N. Main St) and an obvious residential address (2809 Clover Lane, Apt #4). Just like you see the profile and credibility difference (in my analogy) so do search engine bots. For approximately $25 per year, a Static IP can make a huge difference. Not all hosting services offer Static IPs, so it is a "must have" for serious marketers, regardless if you decide to get the Static IP immediately or "down the road a ways".

Susan, I hope this information helps you in your efforts. Let me know if I can provide additional detail of be of further assistance.

Have a great day!

Thank you for the information.  I'm not sure I understand yet just how a static ID is different from any other.  My His & Hers blog has a pr2 rank but I don't know if it is a static ID address or not,  as I don't know how to tell the difference.   It sounds like you're saying I should have a static ID address for it if I want it to increase in page rank.  Is that right?

Hello Susan,

It’s nice to hear from you again!

YES, a domain with it's "own unique IP", a.k.a. Static IP (Internet Protocol) address is looked upon favorably by search engines. When you purchase hosting services, by default, you will share an IP with many other domains (perhaps even a competitor, ugh!) hosted by the service provider.

Its seems like I fell short of the mark with my previous “own” versus “rent” analogy – so, let’s try again!

From the search bot / search engine perspective, having a unique IP in cyberspace gives you the appearance of a larger, more stable, "in it for the long haul" type organization rather than one that "just arrived", "may or may not be here next month". Since, everyone knows the latter group is quite large, a Static IP a simple and effective way to distinguish yourself.

Acquiring and maintaining a Static IP is a very simple one-time "issue" unlike most other search engine optimization techniques which can be better described as on-going in nature. In summary, when the search engine bot encounters your Static IP, it puts you a step closer to the goal of attaining an acceptable page rank.

Let me know if I can help further. It’s always a pleasure to assist!

Best regards,

Craig
