The Dash Poem

by Linda Ellis

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end

He noted that first came the date of her birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own;
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read
With your life’s actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

~ Drummerboy Keep on thinking positive…..thank God for everything that’s good in your life……..and make it a great week!

Hi Brian,

I love this poem and the lesson behind it.  The first time I heard it I was at a very intense leadership weekend of training.  The poem and the timing of it put the weekend in perspective - actually my life in perspective.

Since that weekend, I have thought often of the poem and what it meant to me then and now.  So often we forget that the dash in our lives could be shortened and end at any time.  We forget our own mortality!

What am I doing today to make my dash a memorable one?  It's a great reminder to me that today is the first day of the rest of my life, and it's is all I have.  So, today, I will smile, treat everyone with kindness and respect and do what ever I can to make a difference in someone's life.

Thanks for the reminder and for sharing this poem with us!  I loved reading it again.

This reminds me of our the DVD the secret has changed my life and the way I try to live each day.  Thanks for posting it as a reminder of what's most important in life.  We have an awesome community, where each day we can be inspired by others.
