The Legend Of Pandora
1/24/2007 6:40:32 PM

Pandora Pronounced: Pan-dohr'-uh meaning: all gifted In Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman on earth. Zeus ordered Hephaestus, the god of craftsmanship, to create her and he did, using water and earth. The gods endowed her with many talents: Aprhrdite gave her beauty, Apollo music, Hermes persuasion, even charm and deceit. Hence her name: Pandora, "all-gifted". When Prometheus stole fire from heaven, Zeus took vengeance by presenting Pandora to Epimetheus, Prometheus' brother. With her, Pandora had a jar which she was not to open under any circumstance. Impelled by her natural curiosity, and perhaps encouragment from Epimetheus, Pandora opened the jar, and all evil contained escaped and spread over the earth. She hastened to close the lid, but the whole contents of the jar had escaped, except for one thing which lay at the bottom, and that was Hope. Pandora, the first woman on earth is credited for releasing all illness & pestilence: plagues, poverty, crime, despair, greed, etc. It is the age old story of beatutiful woman on the outside and evil within---making men miserable. There is great similarity to the story of Eve as found in the book of Genesis who disobeyed and gave her husband an apple which released all manner of evil on mankind. Some versions say it was a box while others say it was a jar. Some versions say Pandora was herself the vessal. As with all myths and legends we learn the why of life. Why is there evil? SLANG: Peggy ran and told her mother how the neighbor children were treating her. That opened a Pandora's Box as mother decided to get even. John opened a Pandora's Box when he threatened to leave the board room. Pandora's Box used in that context means that a lot of issues were now going to be addressed.....everything will open to discussion. A Pandora's Box means there will be lots of trouble. IN THE HEAVENS: Prometheus has a number of ridges and valleys and several craters about 20 km in diameter but appears to be less cratered than the neighboring moons Pandora, Andora, Janus and Epimetheus From their very low densities and relatively high albedos, it seems likely that Prometheus, Pandora, Janus and Epimetheus are very porous icy bodies. (Note, however, that there is a lot of uncertainty in these values.) http://www.nineplanets.org/pandora.html- Pandora and the planet Saturn a href="http://www.pantheon.org/areas/gallery/mythology/europe/greek/pandora.html" >photo</a> by John William Waterhouse 1896 ******************************************** PANDORA is a small farming village in Northwestern Ohio. It's first name was Pendleton and it is unclear why the name was changed to Pandora. It is hardly a town of ills and evil. The people are mostly of Swiss and German descent being hard working, frugal farmers who grow the best of potatoes, melons, wheat, and corn. In fact, in community groceries in this area of Ohio the melon's are labeled "PANDORA MELONS". The sign at the edge of town says "Pandora, the Garden Spot of Ohio".

Here's another wonderful garden spot:
