Whales die after second beaching!
11/11/2006 5:27:56 PM

A FURTHER 17 pilot whales have died on a northern New Zealand beach following a sudden restranding a day after 37 whales died in the same area.

Conservation officials had earlier expressed cautious optimism that they had saved 40 whales by sacrificing one young male who appeared reluctant to leave the scene of Friday's mass deaths.

The survivors were herded out to sea but later came ashore at another beach a few kilometres to the south.

A conservation department spokesman said they had six boats monitoring the remaining whales and would stay with them for the rest of the day as they again headed out to sea.

Department stranding incident controller, Steve Goddard, said the decision to put down the young stricken whale was to prevent the other survivors restranding.

"We were also concerned it could still be calling the others back, given they hadn't moved further away during (Friday) afternoon," he said.

There was no visible sign of the pod early today before they were found on the second beach.

New Zealand has one of the world's highest rates of whale strandings, with more than 5000 whale and dolphin strandings recorded since 1840.

Most recently, nearly 50 long-finned whales died in one stranding at Farewell Spit at the top of the South Island

Oh! Hello! I haven't been here for such a long time. Thankyou for posting this. Yes, we seem to have a lot of problems with the poor whales beaching a lot. Saddens many of us here in NZ, especially to see such beauty dying before our very eyes.

I really appreciate you coming by. Thankyou!

Hey Mel,

Do you have any news about the whales?

Take Care,

Jerilyn

Hi Jerilyn! Sorry for late reply. As it's the school holidays, my house has been overrun by children. I have nephews staying with my family and I. Was supposed to be for a week, but a week has run into 3 weeks and still counting. So as I have been juggling with the nephew, my own family and my day job, I have had less time online.
Sorry to also say that I don't have much news about the last whale beaching, but here is a great story I thought you'd be interested in reading.
Many blessings and hugs xo
