Yes, PC security is an issue, but sadly, only a small one in the overall industry of privacy protection.  Over 30,000 companies are already selling our private personal data without our permission or knowledge, and the internet is just a small part of problem of privacy.  Our search patterns are being tracked, and this is a more pressing problem than virus protection.  It is all about being educated on privacy rights and how to protect ourselves on and offline.  Everyone should read this months issue of Conumer Reports to learn how big a threat this is for all of us.  You can never be too safe.
