Empowering Daughters: The Punjab Dhee Rani Collective Marriages Programme
7/12/2025 6:28:20 AM
The Punjab Dhee Rani Programme—also known as the Collective Marriages Programme—is a flagship social initiative launched by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to enable deserving families in Punjab to fulfill the marriage of their daughters with dignity and support
Targeted especially at orphaned girls, daughters of persons with disabilities (PWDs), and those from economically challenged backgrounds, the programme covers brides aged between 18 and 40 years who are unmarried and domiciled in Punjab. Applicants may be parents, guardians, or even the bride herself. Where applications exceed available slots, selection is conducted via electronic balloting to ensure fairness
Under this programme, approximately 3,000 collective weddings across Punjab are arranged annually. Each bride receives a generous financial gift: prior to April 19, 2025, brides were granted gifts worth PKR 206,000; after that date, a reduced gift of PKR 121,000 is distributed via ATM card. In addition, all brides receive a PKR 100,000 “salami” (honorarium) via ATM
By facilitating mass wedding ceremonies and offering substantial financial support, the Dhee Rani Programme not only eases the burden on underprivileged families but also fosters societal hope, inclusivity, and shared responsibility. It stands as a model of government intervention promoting socio-religious obligations with compassion and dignity
