Hello my friends, I am passing this info on to you all, please read and pass it to your friends,Thanks kathy Imu: Family [Imu: Family's picture] Joined: 07 Mar 2006 Total Posts: 198 Jury Duty Scam, Posted: 04-25-06 01:24 PM Hi Friends and Family of UVACA, The following warning about a very serious scam involving Jury Duty has just been brought to my attention by one of our members Linda Emmet and I would like to pass it on to you and ask that you pass it along to anyone you know whom is living in the USA and may be in danger of becoming a victim of this scam. The posted warning is as follows. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: jury duty scam Jury Rigged - I checked with Snopes to verify authenticity....it is true. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of scam has surfaced. Fall for it and your identity could be stolen, reports CBS News. In this con, someone calls pretending to be a court official who threateningly says a warrant has been issued for your arrest because you didn't show up for jury duty. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Sometimes they even ask for credit card numbers. Give out any of this information and bingo! Your identity just got stolen. The scam has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado. This (scam) is particularly insidious because they use intim! idation over the phone to try and bully people into giving information by pretending they're with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their websites, warning consumers about the fraud. Check it out here: http://www.snopescom/crime/fraud/juryduty.asp < http://www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/juryduty.asp> Send this on to your family and friends!! IMPORTANT!!

Hi Kathy, Thank you for this warning. And just remember, even if you forget about your jury duty, they don't immediately arrest you. They usually just send you another summons for jury duty for another time. Thank you, Kathy. Your Good Friend Deborah

Kathy this is really nasty! Jury Duty down here in Australia also carries massive fines for not reporting to serve. I was called 3 times last year and couldn't believe how many 'no shows' there were each time. So I guess we should be on alert for the same scam to crop up here. Being caught 'off guard' does tend to throw our thinking process out of wack. I guess the only way to protect ourselves is to try and remember, SERIOUS issues of any nature are rarely handled over the phone or internet and we are actually allowed to question ! Linda
