Abstract
"It’s safe to say that we're all guilty of making someone feel like less of a person for liking or doing something just because we don’t like it. It’s also fair to say that we have assumed something about someone else based off the actions of people we believe to be like them. We need to stop doing this and realize we’re not all the same."
Abstract:
In the immediate aftermath of the passage of North Carolina’s hateful HB-2 this began to appear on the Internet: #WeAreNotThis As a transgender Tarheel, I want to speak to this. Now, first off, I want to give you some background. I first transitioned in 1997, at the age of 26. At the time, I was living in Easton, Pennsylvania, and working in Bound Brook, New Jersey, at a UPS Air Hub, through a temp agency I am not allowed to name. I had taken the job with this temp agency in September of the previous year, and had told them in the interview process that I was in therapy leading up to sex-reassignment surgery, and told them what was involved: Eventually I would need to begin hormone therapy, and full-time living in the role of my target gender. I was hired anyway.
We Are Not Created Equal | Psychology Today Abstract: A few weeks ago I received an email written by members of the Republican Party that was forwarded on to me. The email discussed some of the current political issues, and in particular Obama Care. In discussing their opposition to the Affordable Care Act, the general sentiment was that we are all created equal and all have the same chances in life to succeed. Why is Obama Care necessary to even the playing field? Why should the rich have to pay more in taxes in order to subsidize health plans for the poor or low income? This belief that everyone is created equal and that we all have the same chance to succeed in life is fundamentally flawed. The truth is that we are not all created equal in our ability to achieve success. Every person has a unique set of strengths, which can aid in achieving the success they desire. Conversely, each person also has their own unique set of challenges that inhibit them in achieving such success. We are meant to share our strengths with those close to us and resolve the challenges we face together.
