Memory
A cheap method to gain performance is to upgrade the memory in your system. It's a good idea to have at least 128megs of memory. Systems that have 64megs of memory may have a difficult time in processing information. Many computers that are slow or making a lot of hard drive noise may be good candidates for memory upgrades.
Defrag
You can run a defrag when your system is running slow. If you hear your hard drive making a lot of noise this should be one of the first things you try. All Windows operating systems have a defrag. Defrag can be found under Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools. Defrag is important because it moves files around to their correct locations. Defrag tries to move files that are associated together closer so the computer cuts down on seek times.
Update Virus Software
Make sure to purchase virus software for your computer. Once you have purchased your software make sure that you keep it up to date. Most virus programs will try to update themselves automatically if you have an internet connection.
