By keeping your computer software current you limit the amount of risk of catching a virus or your system crashing. Below you will find ways to keep your system disk clean when using XP and other operating systems. Memory A cheap method to gain performance is to upgrade the memory in your system. It's a good idea to have at least 128megs of memory. Systems that have 64megs of memory may have a difficult time in processing information. Many computers that are slow or making a lot of hard drive noise may be good candidates for memory upgrades. Defrag You can run a defrag when your system is running slow. If you hear your hard drive making a lot of noise this should be one of the first things you try. All Windows operating systems have a defrag. Defrag can be found under Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools. Defrag is important because it moves files around to their correct locations. Defrag tries to move files that are associated together closer so the computer cuts down on seek times. Update Virus Software Make sure to purchase virus software for your computer. Once you have purchased your software make sure that you keep it up to date. Most virus programs will try to update themselves automatically if you have an internet connection. Why would you want to do this? Lets say that you installed a program that caused your computer to do weird things. You have the ability to choose a date prior to the install to put your computer back to its previous state. View Now What are viruses? Viruses are scripts or computer programs that are made by individuals. Viruses can be made to do many different things. Some viruses have the ability to make software on your computer quit working. There are other viruses that can physically make your computer restart on its own. How do you protect your computer from viruses? You protect your computer by purchasing virus protection software if you do not currently have any. Once you have purchased this software you must also keep the software current. To keep the software current you must check for updated virus definition files from the manufacturer. In most cases these updates are free unless your software has expired. The virus definitions have to be upgraded to help defend against viruses that were made after you purchased your software. doctor image Microsoft has its own Spyware removal software available.

hi, i was running 98se, with 64 mags, and a 10 gig hard drive. i hope i said that right. anyway i was trying to keep up, and get my work done. well 2 weeks ago, 98se just simply refused to run. i get lucky. someone had a better computer and was able to make my drive into the d drive on the better computer. i didn't loose too much. the point is though, take care of your system, keep it updated, and head off problems. i learned the hard way. nan
