The hacktivist group Fancy Bear has exposed the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) after it released their files on tennis players Serena and Venus Williams, and Olympian gymnast Simone Biles. The files show that the three athletes tested positive for using banned performance enhancing drugs.

Serena Williams took oxycodone, hydromorphone, prednisone and methylprednisolone for the last few years, while her sister Venus has been taking prednisone, prednisolone, triamcinolone and formoterol. American gymnast Simone Biles also tested positive for methylphenidate after being required to give a urine sample. All these drugs are banned on the WADA’s list, yet the WADA granted them permission to continue participating in athletics.

The WADA vehemently condemned the cyber attack, and pointed blame at the Russian hacker group for violating cyber-security. Olivier Niggli, WADA Director General, released the following statement:

“The group accessed athlete data, including confidential medical data – such as Therapeutic Use Exemptions delivered by International Sports Federations (IFs) and National Anti-Doping Organizations (NADOs) – related to the Rio Games. WADA condemns these ongoing cyber-attacks that are being carried out in an attempt to undermine WADA and the global anti-doping system.”

Regardless, according to Fancy Bear, the hacked revelations are just the “tip of the iceberg.” The USADA also condemned the hack attack. “The athletes have done nothing wrong. In fact, in each of the situations, the athlete has done everything right in adhering to the global rules of obtaining permission to use a needed medication,” said USADA CEO Travis T. Tygart.
