For example, I could tell myself:

I wasted four years of my life studying to be an engineer!

But what I try to say is this:

Studying engineering showed me what I DIDN'T want to do, and led me to a career as an entrepreneur. It also taught me how to think. And thank goodness I did it or I would never have met my wife!

Too often when we reflect on the past we focus on how difficult and painful that time was, feeling guilty about what we did wrong, berating ourselves for making mistakes.

And whether we mean to or not, that can hold us back from future opportunities and happiness.
