Paintings come to life

'Portrait Of Young Woman' — Pierre Auguste Cot
(RSTagliafierro GIF) Animated painting by RS Tagliafierro

Italian experimental artist and animator Rino Stefano Tagliafierro has brought paintings to life in animated GIFs. Using Adobe After Effects animation software, he takes paintings (largely from the Renaissance era) and modifies them slightly to make them appear as if they are moving.

For more of his work, visit Tagliafierro's website.

Hi Joyce,

Thanks for showing up.

At least in my opinion, even more than his good taste in selecting the paintings, Mr Tagliafierro has shown real skill in turning them into animated ones. This may not be so much evidenced with the angels - though the work with them obviously involved completing parts that were not covered by the wings at first - as with Contemplation, where he no less obviously had to paint the eyes and the mouth in different attitudes from open to closed, and vice versa. See below the originals (you may click on them to enlarge them):

William-Adolphe Bouguereau - Song of the Angels (1881)

John William Godward - Contemplation (1903)
