Depression is Not a Chemical Imbalance, It is a Sign Your Life is Out of Order

by Luella May

(The Best Years in Life) Depression is not a disease and neither is it a chemical imbalance. Rather, it is a sign that your life is out of balance. Depression is a condition that has risen to epidemic proportions. It affects approximately 19 million Americans, almost 10% of the population. We are led to believe that it is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain and can only be treated with certain drugs that correct this imbalance. Yet, these medications may do more harm than good. There are natural, safer methods that can effectively treat depression.

Certain forms of depression are a normal part of life. We all go through traumas that cause sadness, grief, and helplessness. The premise that depression is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain is not a scientific statement. Studies were done several decades ago to see if low serotonin levels were responsible for depression and in 1983 the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reported that "There is no evidence that there is anything wrong in the serotonergic system of depressed patients." Hi luella,

Now this make sense to me. I don't think there is one person on this planet that hasn't been depressed at one time or another in their life.

I know years ago when I was in the hospital after a sever surgery. I had become somewhat depressed. It would not be any wonder, when there are so many things done to your body, it is enough to go into depression. I know one time, my minister told me, I think you are going into depression. After hearing this I said I am not going there. It wasn't long until I wasn't depressed any longer. I believe you can work your way out of most anything. It's all up to you.

Exactly Myrna. Depression is a normal part of life. We all get depressed. Serious depression is the result of unresolved sadness. That rock and a hard spot sort of thing where the person feels that they cannot get out of the situation they're in. When this type of thing becomes prolonged, depression ensues. Another reason for depression is repressed anger. The answer in many cases is to take charge of their lives, but this becomes difficult because of emotions involved. Fear of which is number 1.

So, instead, the medical profession gives you a handy dandy pill that resolves nothing. The anti-depressant at best numbs your emotions so you just function and exist. You don't live. And I'm not even going to go into the side effects here.

Hugs,
Luella
