The Ball and Chain of Besetting Sins

By Rev. Dean Beaty 3/4/12

Hebrews 12:1-2a “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith;” (KJV)

Some people wear a ball and chain from sins of long ago.

The devil keeps rewinding them and we do not let them go.

God says if we’ll confess them He’ll cleanse our heart of sin.

If we listen to the devil, the race we’ll never win.

The Bible says that God has cast our sins behind His back.

They’re buried in the deepest sea and He will not bring them back.

The devil is a liar and for sure our greatest foe.

He’s at work both night and day so we won’t let them go.

But we can have the victory and lose that ball and chain,

And live again within God’s will and fellowship regain.

Do not believe the devil and thereby doubt God’s Word.

If you stop to think about it, it’s really most absurd.

You can lose that ball and chain and run the Christian race.

If you will take God at His word, believing in His grace.

Lay aside besetting sins and the weight that holds you back.

Our Lord’s the Great Physician while Satan is a quack.

I John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive

us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (KJV)

Running Well or Being Hindered

By Rev. Dean Beaty 3/5/12

Galatians 5:7 “Ye did run well; who did hinder you that

ye should not obey the truth?” (KJV)

Nothing makes God sadder than the sins that we possess.

Nothing makes Him gladder than the sins that we confess.

If we confess our sins God is faithful to forgive.

Restoring us to fellowship that in His will we’ll live.

When Christ shed His precious blood our sins were not yet done.

And yet the blood of Jesus Christ completely cleansed each one.

That they were in the future on the day that Jesus died,

Shows Christ cleanses future sin, this truth can’t be denied.

God knew us at creation and the story of our life.

He knew our every failing when struggling in life’s strife.

Not one surprised our Father. Not one He just found out.

All these were before the cross and that’s beyond a doubt.

When Satan tries to hold us down, and keep us in the mud.

Remember Christ knew all our sin and cleansed them with His blood,

Accepting God’s forgiveness is a gift of God’s great grace.

And it’s a key to running well and winning in life’s race.

Philippians 3:13-14 “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended:

but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and

reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the

mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (KJV)

Tackling Temptations (James 1:12-24)

By Rev. Dean Beaty 3/25/12

James 1:12&19 “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when

he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life…Wherefore, my beloved

brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:” (KJV)

We must know God’s Word to face the trials of each day.

It is where we learn the truth; that our feet are made of clay.

For all mankind are sinners and for this we need the Lord.

By faith in Jesus Christ God’s spirit is outpoured.

We all have our opinions of which we think are best.

But it’s better to keep quiet and learn from all the rest.

Opinions vary widely for our backgrounds are diverse.

What we always thought was good might just be the worse.

Do not read the Bible to apply it to another.

This helps us not at all, much less our Christian brother.

Righteous men must never hold anger in their heart.

There’s no fellowship with God when wrath is off the chart.

Get rid of that which hinders so we can hear God’s Word.

For it will cleanse the heart and correct where we have erred.

If our life is yet unclean God’s Word has no avail.

Then when temptations come we are on the path to fail.

A humble contrite spirit will help get rid of pride.

For if pride is not put down, life will be a bumpy ride.

Meekness makes us teachable to learn the Word of God.

Without a humble spirit our walk with God is flawed.

“Be ye doers of the Word and not just hearers only.” (Vs. 22)

If we think that pleases God, we’re just full of baloney.

If we do not act on truth the moment that we hear,

The problem will continue and God’s Word will not adhere.

James 1 20-24 “For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive

with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye

doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any

be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his

natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and

straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.” (KJV)
