Fun-to-wear Scarf Inspired By Paper Chains
12/5/2011 8:03:21 AM
There’s something about the cool temperatures that autumn brings that makes knitters (and crocheters) want to curl up in their favorite chair in front of the TV and knit (or crochet).
“As soon as it gets cool, I like to knit,” says Julie Langensiepen, a resident of Beverly Hills who grew up in a family of knitters. “I’ve been knitting since I was a little girl. My mother taught me, and my grandmother was also an excellent knitter.”
Although she started knitting as a child, it wasn’t until about three years ago that Langensiepen designed a colorful, textured chain-link scarf, inspired by a childhood memory. “My inspiration was the paper chains I use to make in my childhood,” she says.
Langensiepen takes great pleasure in knitting her fun-to-wear scarves. “I think there’s a certain amount of comfort when a pattern is repeated throughout a knitted piece,” she says.
She describes the
scarves
as “a great way to use scrap yarn.” She says, “You don’t need a whole skein, and you can combine textures and colors. The only specification would be if you’re using a thin yarn, you would cast on more stitches because you want consistency throughout.”
As a longtime crafter, Langensiepen also sews, making various items, including dolls, animals, eyeglass cases, purses, wearables and decorative home accents.
“As far as creativity goes, I once had a professor who told me to ‘think of each piece as a brick in the wall of your work, so if one doesn’t meet your expectations, don’t worry about it.’ That analogy frees me up to be creative everyday,” she says.
Langensiepen, who sells her work under the name J.E.M.A. Dolls, will be among a host of artists with work displayed in the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center’s Holiday Shop 2011, set for Dec. 2-17. Admission is free. (BBAC is at 1516 S. Cranbrook Road). Prices for her chain-link scarves start at $40. Her handmade goods are also available at The Yellow Door Art Market in Berkley and Art Loft in Birmingham.
