Two Retirees and Their Dog

By Dean Beaty 9/28/11

Our family got a puppy. Today she’s two years old.

We found the ad in Craig’s List, that’s how this runt was sold.

Her head was like a tennis ball but her ears were fully grown.

If I had tossed her in the air I’m sure she would have flown.

Weighing just over a pound, with fur as black as coal,

Except for those huge ears you’d have thought she was a mole.

With not much to recommend her, they gave her to us free.

The way she looked to me, ‘twas a wartime refugee.

But we took her anyway, though her breath could kill a snake.

The word FREE appealed to me and mom’s tears I could not take.

Two years down the road mom has now confessed it all.

They were not tears of joy, something got in her eyeball.

Fast-forward now two years. She turns heads where e’er we go. (the dog)

If she had her papers, she would be the best in show.

Cassie’s colors turned out great. Her head matches her ears.

If she ever went away, for real would be our tears.

She’s only fifty pounds but her bark and growl full size.

For a shepherd she is small with big twinkles in her eyes.

We’re told she’s Belgian Malinois. For that she is just right.

No matter what her pedigree, to us she’s a delight.
