Eric At Fourteen
By Papa (Dean Beaty) 8/11
Twas the night before fishing and through the motel,
Not a child was stirring and that was quite well.
Eric had heard that it was great fun,
“But it would be better if I could use a gun.”
“Don’t take those bullets” and dad’s voice was firm.
“What we really need is a long slimy worm.”
Fishing was new so Eric read up in a book.
“What’s this about, this worm on a hook?”
Later they arrived and a got into a boat.
“This thing is leaking, I don’t think it will float.”
Soon they were in the middle of the river.
“If I can’t take a gun how ‘bout” a bow and quiver.”
“Put the worm on the hook and drop it in the water.”
“And when the line jerks, that’s when you’ve got-her.”
“If it is large it will make quite a hall.”
“Then with the fish you can stand proud and tall.”
In the picture dad took, the message was clear;
Instead of a fish he’d rather have a deer.
“Wow! Catching a fish with a rod and a reel.”
“But a deer in the woods, now that’s a big deal.”
I now understand why his face shows no peace,
He just now found out it is catch-and-release.
“I want to make this emphatically clear.”
“You don’t do that when hunting a deer.”
