Chapter Four : The Way of Humanity 8 The Founding Master, upon seeing a horse pulling a cart, asked one of his disciples, “As for this moving cart: is it the horse that is moving, or the cart?” The disciple answered, “The horse moves, and the cart follows along.” The Founding Master asked again, “If it stops while moving, would you then whip the horse or the cart?” The disciple answered, “One should whip the horse.” The Founding Master then continued, “What you have said is right.
