1878: The White House gets its first telephone.
1913: The first US drive-up gasoline station opens for business in Pittsburgh, PA, ringing up 30 gallons worth of sales on opening day. The price of a gallon of gas then: 27 cents.
1955: Rosa Parks, an African American, refuses to give up her bus seat to a white man in Montgomery, Alabama, setting into motion a boycott of the bus service by Blacks that would lead to the US Supreme Court's decision declaring segregated seating unconstitutional.
1969: The escalating conflict in Vietnam forces the US government to conduct its first military draft lottery since World War II.
