1929: Lt. Commander Richard Byrd completes the first airplane flight over the South Pole in a time of 19 hours, despite needing to jettison a month and a half's worth of food to lighten his load.
1933: Pennsylvania becomes the first state to be granted a license to sell liquor, following the repeal of Prohibition.
1962: Major League Baseball officials and player representatives agree to return to the original format of just one All-Star Game a year, a schedule boosted to twice a year in 1959 to raise money for the players' pension fund.
