Take Your Seat
By Rev. Dean Beaty 7/27/09 (Eye witness to this sad story.)
Luke 17:2 “It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck,
and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.” (KJV)
Two people came to church, she for many years.
For him it was his first, no doubt with anxious fears.
Fortunate for him, in the back an empty seat.
There I’ll be obscure, no one I’ll have to meet.
Doesn’t that young man know that I sit there all the time?
For me to have to move, why that would be a crime.
She had been there first but left, I do not know just why.
Returning, snatched her purse that she had placed nearby.
She took another seat that was just across the isle.
Tossed her purse upon the floor, steaming all the while.
The young man shrugged his shoulders, not knowing his offence.
Why was she so upset? The whole thing made no sense.
Next week she had her seat and all was as before.
But he could not be found, for he returned no more.
In heaven, I’ll be rewarded for I was faithful to attend.
The young man, I’m not sure what was his final end.
