Invite Me as a Friend
Saviour, Like a Shepherd Lead Us
8/2/2009 3:39:52 PM
Ira Sankey was well-known as D.L Moody’s song leader. In 1876 on Christmas Eve Ira Sankey was traveling on a Steamboat all alone when someone recognized him and asked him to sing. That night his thoughts were to sing some Christmas song but this is the song that kept coming to his mind. "Saviour, like a shepherd lead us, Much we need thy tender care. In thy pleasant pastures feed us, For our use thy folds prepare." As the song ended one could feel that souls were stirred. One rough looking man came forward. To Sankey the man said, “Did you ever serve in the Union Army. Did you serve on picket duty on a bright moonlit night the summer of 1862?” “Yes, I’m sure I did.” Replied Mr. Sankey, “Did you?” “Yes, but I was serving in the Confederate Army. As I watched you in the bright moonlight, my finger on the trigger., I knew I couldn’t have miss my target, except you started to sing. You sang that song. "'We are Thine, do Thou befriend us,' "'Be the guardian of our way... As I heard you sing I remembered my mother as she sang that song to me many times. But she was taken in death way too soon or I might have been a very different man. That night as I could not pull the trigger and lower my musket, the thought went through my mind How great that God is, that could keep me from killing you. My heart was touched but I didn’t know what to do. Please help me find the Savior for my sin sick soul. Ira Sankey gently put his arms around this man and led him to the Savior.
