Why Can't I Do It?!
6/3/2009 9:56:42 AM

What is something you can't do that seemingly everyone else can?

I can't hold a pencil the "normal" way. I'm not really sure what the normal way is, but I hold a pencil/pen with my four fingers on one side and my thumb on the other. My elementary school principal made me try to hold it the normal way, but I couldn't. She then said she never seen anyone do something so strange (a great way to make an eight year old feel secure about himself). lol

Never say can't Jayson. The point is whether you NEED to change.

Does holding your pen that way cause you or others a problem.

My granddaughter is left-handed, she is multi-talented, she is pretty, popular and a very successful young lady, but, being left-handed means that she smudges her work. It is a problem as she does get told that work is scruffy.

I am a left-handed two-handed sportsman. If it's table tennis or baseball or rounders or darts or javelin I'm right-handed, but, golf, cricket(sorry English) rowing or something two-handed I'm left-handed. DOes it cause me a problem? No.

BUT.

For most of my sixty plus years I wore my watch on my right arm and being right-handed it meant scratched and knocked glass. THEN, I was challenged at a business meeting to make an UNCOMFORTABLE change. I elected to move my watch and guess what? After two weeks it was NORMAL. No problem.

As I say, if it causes you a problem you can do it. If not, then why would you need to.

Hi Jayson,

Please, don't feel bad about your pencil grip. I worked for eleven years as a school occupational therapistand part of my job was helping children with their handwriting and pencil grip. I have seen some truly odd grips. I know exactly how you hold a pencil, and it is not that uncommon to see in an elementary school. To help children with holding their pencil the "normal" way, we would try various pencil grips and styles of pencils, but sometimes, it was just better to help the child write better with the grip they had, and often preferred. Personally, I think it was your principal who had a problem, not you, lol. I'm sure there were other children who were not using the "normal" tripod grasp on their pencils. And, most of the children with the odd grips were very intelligent. So, you have it from a professional, you are fine, and besides, I bet you do most of your written communication on a computer or text on a cellphone!

Have a great day,

Andrea :-}

Hi Jayson,

I have a death-grip on my pencil/pen that caused me a callous when the nuns would make us write multiplication tables over and over for punishment.

I remember the Palmer Method or whatever, you're supposed have a light grip or actually no grip so someone could easily slide the pencil out of your hand.  NOT HAPPENING WITH ME.  My pencil is MINE.
