How Poor People Live

How Poor People Live
 - Author Unknown

One day a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people live.

They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?"

"It was great, Dad."

"Did you see how poor people live?" the father asked.

"Oh yeah," said the son.

So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father.

The son answered, "I saw that we have one dog and they had four.

We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end.

We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.

We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs.

We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them."

The boy's father was speechless.

Then his son added, "Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are."

Great story. I'm going to read it at our family Christmas dinner. My family knows that we grew up thinking we were poor, as we also lived in the country. When our barn was full of the summer's hay and we had our favorite cattle and calves from one end to the other, it seemed like life could not be better living in the city.
Mom had a pantry with shelves upon shelves of canned fruits, vegetable and meats of every description, honey under the stairs and a root cellar of spuds, turnips and beets. Eggs and milk were never on a grocery list like they are now. Filling the wood box was a chore I hated but the warm wood & coal stove had it's rewards. We had  a dog, his name was Major, Grandpa in our family for several years and his spot was next to the stove. He saw life differently through those reading glasses I'm sure. There wasn't anything we needed then.

Linda, what a beautiful story and so true!!  We who seem so poor to others are rich in so many other ways.  I can relate to the wide open spaces living on a spot of 60 acres of land and the freedom of seeing wildlife and enjoying the outdoors.  We don't own the land but have use of it and enjoy its many treasures.  Most people believe that a large estate, paved driveway, several cars parked in garages and a swimming pool is the way to live.  It sounds wonderful but think of the pressure and stress of maintaining that kind of life style.  It means many hours of hard work and being away from that beautiful place - the rush and stress of traffic to keep it going.

We are happy to be 'poor' and live simple lives yet have the riches of God's World of Expressions.

Sara
