IF  I  HAD  ONLY  KNOWN

As the young expectant mother came to my inn on that day;

I did not have the room; there was no place there to stay.

I did give them my stable.  It was all that I could loan.

I would have given my room, if I had only known

It didn’t seem important and it’s not as though I knew.

No angel spoke from heaven to tell me what to do.

There’s a lot more I know now, now that He is fully grown.

I would have done things different, if I had only known.

Just take a look at your life.  Have you let the Savior in?

He died upon the cross just to save your soul from sin.

You know a lot about Him.  His works you have been shown.

You cannot say as I did, “If I had only known.”

Someday you’ll stand before Him.  What excuse then will you give?

You heard the gospel story; how He died that you might live.

Right now you have no room.  But you’ll take a different tone.

It will be too late then to say, “If I had only known.”
