THE  CHARACTER  OF  GOD
By Rev. Dean Beaty 11/22/08

I have done the research and this story I found true.
It took place in New York and I bring it now to you.
The boy’s name was Shiah, but he was not like the rest.
To be more like the others was Shiah greatest quest.
His father was convinced the boy could not be healed.
And as he walked from school they passed boys in a field.
Shiah humbly asked his dad, “Can I play softball too?”
They asked a young ball player, who knew not what to do.
They were loosing by six runs with the ball game almost done.
So all the team agreed, for the game could not be won.
But they scored a few more runs and now could win the game.
It was Shiah’s turn to bat.  Would the team still feel the same?
They gave the bat to Shiah and he walked up to the plate.
But he could not hit the ball for his swing was weak and late.
The pitcher stepped up closer to gently lob it in.
With two outs down already, just one more run would win.
He did not know the way to hold the bat up right.
But he swung it anyway with eagerness and might.
“Strike two.” was now the count he heard the umpire say.
Just one more failed strike would end his happy day.
Then one of the players helped him hold onto the bat.
He stood close behind him to keep it swinging flat.
A slow and easy pitch; they hit it with a bound.
The pitcher then bent over and caught it on the ground.
Just a toss to the first baseman and the team’s fate would be sealed.
But as hard as he could throw, he threw it in right field.
“Run Shiah run,” was the shout from all his team.
He started for first base and in his eyes there was a gleam.
Never before this day had Shiah ran to any base.
And the shout “Run Shiah run,” was heard all ov’r the place.
Shiah rounded first but his running was too slow.
It would all be over with just one simple throw.
The fielder hurried back to gather up the ball.
Now a throw to second base and that would end it all.
But the fielder threw the ball, high over his player’s head.
And joining with the others he shouted out instead.
“Run Shiah run,” from both benches it was heard.
As a player grabbed Shiah and turned him more towards third.
And heading for home plate both teams helping him along.
Then up onto the shoulders of the winning baseball throng.
Shiah had never played the game of ball before.
With the help of all the players his teammates made the score.
With tears upon dad’s cheeks and hearing them applaud.
Said, “Today theses boys showed the character of God.”
