THE GIFT FROM OUR CAT
By Dean Beaty 11/19/08
I’ll tell you a story that’s funny but true.
Though you’ll think I am joking before I am through.
With Christmas approaching; bright gifts and all that.
I’ll tell you the story of the gift from our cat.
We were both sleeping all snug in our bed;
When a mouse started playing around our bed spread.
My Matthew jumped up so lively and quick.
He chased that mad mouse with a towel and a stick.
He caught the spry critter with triumph and pride.
Not wanting to kill it, he threw it outside.
But mice are much smarter than we ever thought.
Cause it came back in, fearing not to be caught.
Just then a great ruckus arose in our room.
This time I’ll kill it with a swat from my broom.
But search as we might no mouse could be found.
The thing that we needed was a lively bloodhound.
Now the cat got involved by chasing the mouse
And they could be heard all over the house.
He jumped on our bed with the mouse held down tight.
Is this to go on the rest of the night?
Going back to our bed we were soon sound asleep,
When twice more the cat jumped up with a leap.
Being so close to the great yuletide season,
To bring us his gift must’ve been the cat’s reason.
But there was no sleeping the rest of the night,
For the mouse got away and ran out of sight.
Maybe tomorrow we’ll catch the dread foe,
Then we’ll give it to cat in a box with a bow.
