Jimi caused some controversy when, in the song Purple Haze, he sang "'Scuse me, while I kiss This Guy." Many educated people thought it was okay as they believed he was just referring to the magical elf in his pocket, Jeff Houser.
He was eventually "murdered" by a hit man sent by Nixon, since Jimi performed the Star Spangled Banner really awesomely and caused many deaths with his insane, amazing, sexy guitar tone. Certainly one of the most relevant guitarists of the last 35 years, Jimi Hendrix's influence has been dominant amongst guitarists in the rock genre, yet stretches out beyond that, influencing many young blues and modern jazz guitarists. Perhaps the biggest influence Jimi Hendrix would make in the world of rock guitar was not via the guitarist's choice of notes or licks, but in his sound, one which many post-Hendrix guitarists strive to achieve. The events surrounding the death of Jimi Hendrix are (as seems to be the case in the death of any celebrity) shrouded in rumour and controversy. The Tony Brown book "The Final Days of Jimi Hendrix" attempts to dispel some of the myths, and shed some light on the guitarist's demise.
It is unclear exactly the direction the guitarist's music would have taken had he lived. Some speculate he would have returned to his strong blues roots, an area the guitarist always explored extensively in his live performances. Others suggest his associations with Miles Davis would have prompted a foray into jazz music. Indeed, his usage of voicings like the dominant7#9 chord (often referred to in rock circles as the "Jimi Hendrix chord") implied an interest in sounds not normally associated with rock music. It was here in room 507 that Jimi Hendrix overdosed and died across town at the Samarkand Hotel on September 18th 1970.
Hendrix, one of the stars of the recent Isle of Wight pop festival, whose blatant sexuality on stage made him the centre of countless controversies, had been found by his beautiful West German girlfriend in a coma in bed at her hotel.
Twenty-three-year-old Monica Danneman called an ambulance and but it is disputed whether he dies prior to the ambulance arriving or en route.
Hendrix had booked in on September 6.
He reserved a 17-a-day fifth floor suite but rarely used it. He was last seen in the hotel on Thursday afternoon cleaning his shoes in his suite.
