A Classic Expression of Courage and Faith

Dear Friends,

The following work was written by American Lt. John Gillespie Magee, who joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) as a volunteer in 1940 and was killed in action over England a year and a half later. He was just 19 years old.

It was the only poem he wrote. Many thousands of students have memorized its 14 glorious lines many years ago in school.

It is a classic expression of courage and faith.

High Flight
By Lt. John Gillespie Magee

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sunsplit clouds--and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of--wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touch the face of God.

Friends, Lt. Magee's poem has little to do with business but everything to do with life. I felt it was important to share this with you.

Have an Blessed Weekend!

Thanks, Joanne.  I remember we had to memorize this poem in school.  I suppose they likely would not allow it nowadays.

Dear JoAnne,

the expression in poetry never gets old when inspired within a Holy and purified desire for truth. I read this for the first time, and felt the pinch of salt all over me, a burning feeling filled with emotion .

thanks for this .
